It may sound strange to those unfamiliar
with Chiropractic healthcare, but at least two good studies have demonstrated
success in the chiropractic management of colic (Klougart 1989, Nilsson
1985).

How can Chiropractic
help a colicky baby?
Consider the anatomy and the physical stress suffered by many
babies during the birth process and normal development. In a
normal, healthy baby, the brain sends signals from the brain,
down the spinal cord, out the spinal nerves to all the organs,
tissues, and cells of the body. The spinal column is comprised
of 24 movable bones (vertebra), which protects those delicate
nerve tissues. If there is no interference with between the
spine and nervous system, life is good. If the spine misaligns
(although "dysfunction" is a more scientifically accurate term)
and "irritates" those delicate spinal nerves, the body can get
sick. Chiropractors call that spinal dysfunction, "subluxation".
Subluxations can result in sickness/symptoms like excess gas,
pain, constipation, dishrag, or colic. The baby cannot say,
"Hey dad, hey mom, I hurt!" But they can cry, driving both parents
crazy in the process. Chiropractors are the only physicians
trained to locate and correct subluxations. |

How do subluxations
occur?
The birth process alone can cause the first subluxation suffered
by a baby/child. We are not suggesting that the OB/GYN is delivering
babies wrong, only that the birth process itself, whether it
be natural or Caesarian, can be very physically stressful due
to the extreme traction and head rotation realized during birth.
As the child develops, he/she falls a zillion times a day and
often sleeps with the head tilted to one side for extended periods,
causing a subluxation. |

What are the typical
results of treating colic with Chiropractic techniques?
According to the literature, your baby has an excellent chance
of improving within just 2 weeks of chiropractic care! Sure
beats many frustrating months of hoping that "he/she will simply
grow out of it". |

Is it safe to adjust
the spine of a tiny baby?
Of course. The adjustment to a baby is safe, gentle, and effective.
The doctors of the Farabaugh Chiropractic Office are trained
professionals, capable of adapting the force of the adjustment
to the patient. An adjustment to a baby obviously is much lighter
than the force or adjustment required to adjust the spine of
a burly truck driver. You may be interested to know, that to
date, not a single research paper has suggested that spinal
manipulation is harmful to babies or young children. To obtain
information about baby adjusting, consult our office. If you
want information about drugs or surgery, consult your medical
physician. |
