Vertebral Distraction Pump (VDP)

Dr. Greg Palkowski of Beavercreek Chiropractic located in Beavercreek, Ohio (close to Dayton) wrote the best explanation of the use of a Vertebral Distraction Pump (VDP). Please consider the following description provided with permission from Dr. Palkowski.

This recently developed manipulative tool by Dr. Bruce Broughton of Apple Valley, CA, and the Bray Corp. is used for treatment of cervical and lumbar disc disorders. The VDP uses the flexion-distraction technique via a hand held instrument to effectively treat the two basic causes of lower back and leg pain: dysfunction of the intervertebral disc and/or the articular facets. In the cervical spine, the VDP serves to perform flexion-distraction of the cervical disc unit. Published research studies have shown demonstrable evidence of the reduction of patient pain levels and the improvement of functionality of acute and chronic spinal disc displacement syndromes. This tool compliments the utilization of the Activator Adjusting Instrument (AAI).

In the care of these types of disc conditions, the benefits from using the AAI in conjunction with the VDP, result in no twisting in the performance of the adjustment. This is because the patient is in a neutral, prone position which therefore reduces the risk of injury to the tissues (ligaments, tendons and muscles) around the spine and within the disc. The Activator procedure, because of its controlled force and displacement, is widely considered to be a safer and non-traumatic method of chiropractic care.
