[See links below].
Whiplash is a rather generic term, which pertains to the type of
injury usually associated with being rear-ended. Statistics show
that 50% of all persons involved in rear-end collisions do not get
hurt at all. Of those that do get injury, 50% recover fully. However,
half of all patients injured in rear end collisions progress to
a chronic state, a small percentage actually suffering permanent
disability. The shear number of rear-end collisions (approximately
3 million) which occur in this country every year, makes this type
of injury one of the most prevalent in our society. A large percentage
of patients reporting chronic neck pain, state that the pain began
with a car crash.
Whiplash can result in injury to the muscles, ligaments, disc, nerve,
bone and joints. Your Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to thoroughly
examine your spine to determine the source of your pain and recommend
appropriate treatment. The goals of care are to: (1) reduce swelling/inflammation,
(2) restore motion to the tight spinal joints, (3) strengthen the
muscles of the spine. Research has proven Chiropractic to be effective
for both acute and chronic neck and low back pain. Studies have
also demonstrated that Chiropractic care may be the only proven
therapy for chronic neck pain.
